A Nine-Day Novena
Nine days with the prince of the heavenly host, honoring the nine choirs of angels and asking St. Michael's protection in the spiritual battle. For courage, for protection, and for a soul guarded all the way home.
In the Book of Revelation, war breaks out in heaven, and Michael and his angels fight against the dragon. St. Michael is the great defender, the prince of the heavenly host, whose name is itself the war cry of the faithful: Who is like God? For centuries Catholics have turned to him for protection in the spiritual battle that every soul is born into.
This novena follows the pattern of the Chaplet of St. Michael, an old devotion in which the archangel is honored through the nine choirs of angels, each with its own grace to ask. The chaplet was given to a Carmelite nun, the Servant of God Antonia d'Astonac, and approved by Pope Pius IX in 1851. Over nine days we honor one choir at a time and ask, through St. Michael's intercession, for the virtue heaven attaches to it. It is especially fitting in the days before Michaelmas, his feast on September 29, but it may be prayed at any time.
How to Pray the Novena
The First Day
"Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal." (Isaiah 6:6)
The Chaplet of St. Michael honors the nine choirs of angels, the ranks of heaven that worship before the throne of God. At their head, by God's appointment, stands Michael, whose name is itself a battle cry: Who is like God? We begin with the highest choir, the Seraphim, who burn closest to the fire of divine love.
The Seraphim are aflame with charity, and it was a seraph who carried a burning coal to purify the lips of Isaiah. Ask St. Michael and the Seraphim today to set your own cold heart alight. The Christian life is a war, and its first weapon is love. A man who burns with charity is already halfway to courage.
St. Michael, prince of the heavenly host, you stand before the God whom the Seraphim adore in unceasing love. Lend me their fire. Burn away the coldness in me and my love of lesser things, and let charity be the flame from which all my courage rises.
Through your intercession and theirs, may the Lord make me worthy to burn with the fire of perfect charity. St. Michael, with the Seraphim, pray for me.
Today's IntentionToday, with the Seraphim, I ask St. Michael for the fire of charity to be the root of all my courage.
Pray one Our Father and three Hail Marys. Then close with the Prayer to St. Michael below.
The Second Day
"Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal." (Philippians 3:13-14)
The Cherubim are the choir of knowledge and wisdom, the angels who behold God's truth without shadow. The tradition asks their help to leave the ways of sin and to run, not merely walk, in the paths of Christian perfection.
Conversion is rarely a single moment. It is the daily turning away from what drags us down and the daily pressing forward toward Christ. Ask St. Michael and the Cherubim for the clear sight to name what is holding you back, and for the resolve to leave it behind and move.
St. Michael, captain of the angels of light, the Cherubim gaze upon the wisdom of God and never turn away. Win for me the grace to see my sins clearly and to hate them honestly, and the strength to break with whatever keeps me from Christ.
Through your intercession and theirs, may the Lord grant me grace to leave the ways of sin and to run in the paths of Christian perfection. St. Michael, with the Cherubim, pray for me.
Today's IntentionToday, with the Cherubim, I ask St. Michael for the grace to leave my sins behind and run toward holiness.
Pray one Our Father and three Hail Marys. Then close with the Prayer to St. Michael below.
The Third Day
"God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." (James 4:6)
The Thrones are the choir on which, in the language of Scripture, the justice and majesty of God rest. The tradition asks them for a true and sincere spirit of humility. It is fitting, because the war St. Michael fights began with pride. Lucifer would not serve, and Michael's answer was the cry of the humble: Who is like God?
Pride is the oldest enemy, and it hides well in good men. Ask St. Michael and the Thrones today for the humility that knows the difference between confidence in God and confidence in self. The humble man is the hardest for the enemy to topple, because he is not standing on himself.
St. Michael, you conquered pride with humility and would not exalt yourself against your Maker. Drive the same pride out of me. Teach me to know my place before God, to take correction without resentment, and to seek no glory that is not His.
Through your intercession and that of the Thrones, may the Lord infuse into my heart a true and sincere spirit of humility. St. Michael, with the Thrones, pray for me.
Today's IntentionToday, with the Thrones, I ask St. Michael for true humility, the ground the enemy cannot take.
Pray one Our Father and three Hail Marys. Then close with the Prayer to St. Michael below.
The Fourth Day
"I discipline my body and keep it under control." (1 Corinthians 9:27)
The Dominations are the choir through which God orders the work of heaven. The tradition asks their help to govern our senses and to subdue our unruly passions. A man who cannot rule himself will be ruled by something, by his appetites, his anger, or his fears.
Spiritual warfare is not only a matter of dramatic temptations. It is largely won or lost in the ordinary government of the self, the eyes, the tongue, the temper, the desires. Ask St. Michael and the Dominations for mastery over what is disordered in you, so that you, and not your passions, hold the reins.
St. Michael, commander under God of the armies of heaven, the Dominations carry out His will in perfect order. Bring that order to me. Give me command over my senses and my passions, that my body may serve my soul and my soul may serve God.
Through your intercession and that of the Dominations, may the Lord grant me grace to govern my senses and to subdue my unruly passions. St. Michael, with the Dominations, pray for me.
Today's IntentionToday, with the Dominations, I ask St. Michael for mastery over my senses and my passions.
Pray one Our Father and three Hail Marys. Then close with the Prayer to St. Michael below.
The Fifth Day
"Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." (Matthew 6:13)
The Virtues are the choir of strength and of miracles, the angels through whom God works His power in the world. The tradition asks them to preserve us from evil and from falling into temptation. We do not stand against the enemy on our own strength, and we were never meant to.
Temptation is not yet sin, and being tempted is no defeat. The danger lies in fighting alone. Ask St. Michael and the Virtues for the strength of heaven precisely at your weakest point, the temptation you know is coming, the hour when your own resolve runs thin.
St. Michael, mighty in the strength of God, the Virtues are clothed with His power. Clothe me with it too, especially where I am weakest. Stand with me in the hour of temptation, and let me lean on heaven's strength when my own gives way.
Through your intercession and that of the Virtues, may the Lord preserve me from evil and from falling into temptation. St. Michael, with the Virtues, pray for me.
Today's IntentionToday, with the Virtues, I ask St. Michael for heaven's strength at my weakest point.
Pray one Our Father and three Hail Marys. Then close with the Prayer to St. Michael below.
The Sixth Day
"Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil." (Ephesians 6:11)
The Powers are the choir that holds the enemy in check, the angels who restrain the forces of darkness. The tradition asks them to protect our souls against the snares and temptations of the devil. This is the heart of devotion to St. Michael, the defender who stands between the soul and its accuser.
The enemy is real, and his chief weapon is the lie: that you are alone, that you are beyond mercy, that resistance is pointless. Ask St. Michael and the Powers for protection against his snares, and remember that the prince of the heavenly host fights for you and has already won.
St. Michael, defender of the people of God, the Powers restrain the enemy by the might of the Lord. Stand guard over my soul. Scatter the snares laid for me, silence the accuser, and shield me from the schemes of the devil in the open and in the dark.
Through your intercession and that of the Powers, may the Lord protect my soul against the snares and temptations of the devil. St. Michael, with the Powers, pray for me.
Today's IntentionToday, with the Powers, I ask St. Michael to guard my soul against the snares of the enemy.
Pray one Our Father and three Hail Marys. Then close with the Prayer to St. Michael below.
The Seventh Day
"To obey is better than sacrifice." (1 Samuel 15:22)
The Principalities are the choir set over nations and communities, the angels who carry out God's governance among peoples. The tradition asks them for a true spirit of obedience. Obedience is an unfashionable word, yet it is the hinge of the whole battle. The fall was a refusal to obey, and the victory of Christ was obedience to the end.
St. Michael's greatness lies in perfect obedience, a will that bends entirely to God and is therefore unbreakable. Ask him and the Principalities for the same in your own life, the readiness to obey God's law and His voice even when it costs you.
St. Michael, faithful servant of the Most High, the Principalities govern in obedience to His will. Win for me a heart like yours, quick to obey God and slow to bargain with Him. Where His will is clear, let me follow it without delay or excuse.
Through your intercession and that of the Principalities, may the Lord fill my soul with a true spirit of obedience. St. Michael, with the Principalities, pray for me.
Today's IntentionToday, with the Principalities, I ask St. Michael for a heart quick to obey God.
Pray one Our Father and three Hail Marys. Then close with the Prayer to St. Michael below.
The Eighth Day
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7)
The Archangels are the choir of God's great messengers, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael among them, sent on His weightiest errands. The tradition asks them for perseverance in faith and in all good works, that we may attain the glory of heaven. The Christian life is not a sprint won in a day. It is a race finished only at the end.
Many men begin well and tire, and the enemy is patient and counts on our fatigue. Ask St. Michael and the Archangels for the grace to keep the faith and keep working, not only today but to the last day, so that you may say with St. Paul that you finished the race.
St. Michael, herald and warrior of God, the Archangels are sent to carry His will to its completion. Carry me through to mine. When I grow weary or discouraged, hold me to the faith and to the good I have begun, that I may persevere to the end.
Through your intercession and that of the Archangels, may the Lord grant me perseverance in faith and in all good works, that I may attain the glory of heaven. St. Michael, with the Archangels, pray for me.
Today's IntentionToday, with the Archangels, I ask St. Michael for the grace to persevere to the end.
Pray one Our Father and three Hail Marys. Then close with the Prayer to St. Michael below.
The Ninth Day
"He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways." (Psalm 91:11)
We end with the choir nearest to us, the Angels, and among them the guardian angel God has given to walk beside you. The tradition asks them to protect us through this mortal life and to conduct us, at its end, to the glory of heaven. The whole battle has this as its goal, that we be brought safely home.
On this last day, entrust the entire novena to St. Michael and to the angels who guard you. You have asked for charity, humility, mastery, strength, protection, obedience, and perseverance. Now ask for the end of it all, that you and those you love may be guarded home.
St. Michael, prince of the heavenly host, and you my guardian angel, watch over me on the road that remains. Defend me in every danger of body and soul, and when my time comes, lead me safely past the enemy to the glory of heaven.
Through your intercession and that of the holy Angels, may the Lord protect me in this mortal life and conduct me at its end to heaven. St. Michael, with all the Angels, pray for me.
Today's IntentionToday, with the Angels, I entrust myself and those I love to St. Michael, to be guarded all the way home.
Pray one Our Father and three Hail Marys. Then close with the Prayer to St. Michael below.
The Prayer to St. Michael · Recited Each Day
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Traditional · Prayer of Pope Leo XIII, 1886
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
