A Nine-Day Novena
Nine days in honor of the love of Christ poured out for us, for peace in our homes, mercy for our sins, and confidence in the Heart that never fails.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the Church's way of contemplating the love of Christ under the sign of His human heart, crowned with thorns, opened on the Cross, and burning with love for every soul. It was given new urgency in the seventeenth century through St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, to whom the Lord revealed His Heart and asked for love and reparation in return. To this devotion He attached great promises, among them peace in families, comfort in trials, and mercy for sinners who turn to Him.
This novena is prayed in the nine days before the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart, which falls on June 12 this year, so the nine days run from June 3 through June 11. It may also be prayed at any time, and the Church especially commends devotion to the Sacred Heart on the First Friday of each month and throughout June, the month dedicated to His Heart.
How to Pray the Novena
The First Day
"Learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart." (Matthew 11:29)
Devotion to the Sacred Heart is devotion to a Person. When the Church lifts up the Heart of Jesus, she is pointing to the living heart of God made man, taken as the sign of a love that is real, particular, and poured out for each of us. The God who flung the stars into place chose to beat with a human heart, and He gave that heart away completely.
Before you ask Him for anything, begin by adoring that love. Kneel for a moment before the Heart that beats for you, and let the first word of this novena be worship. Everything you will ask in the days ahead rests on this: that the One you approach loves you already.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, true Heart of God and of man, I adore You. I believe that You love me with a love beyond my understanding, and that You gave Your Heart entirely for my sake. Teach me to come to You gently and lowly, as You are.
Receive my poor heart in return, small and divided as it is, and begin to make it like Your own. Heart of Jesus, Son of the Eternal Father, I adore You and I love You.
Today's IntentionToday I begin by adoring the love of the Sacred Heart, before I ask Him for anything.
Pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. Repeat three times: "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You." Then close with the Final Prayer below.
The Second Day
"I came to cast fire upon the earth, and would that it were already kindled." (Luke 12:49)
The Church calls the Heart of Jesus a burning furnace of charity. His love is no mild sentiment. It is a fire He longed to set loose in the world, a love strong enough to go to the Cross and patient enough to wait for us through every delay and every refusal.
Our own love is often a small and flickering thing, quick to cool. Ask the Sacred Heart today to lend you His fire, to burn away what is cold and selfish in you, and to kindle a love that can warm the people around you. A heart held near the furnace does not stay cold for long.
Heart of Jesus, furnace of love, my heart is too cold and too small to love as I ought. Set me on fire with Your charity. Burn away my selfishness, my resentments, and my fear, and leave in their place a love that gives itself away.
Let me love You above all things, and love others for Your sake. Heart of Jesus, burning furnace of charity, set me ablaze with Your love.
Today's IntentionToday I ask the Sacred Heart to kindle His love in me and burn away what is cold and selfish.
Pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. Repeat three times: "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You." Then close with the Final Prayer below.
The Third Day
"I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." (Mark 2:17)
To St. Margaret Mary, the Lord showed His Heart wounded most of all by the indifference of those He loved, and still He asked for love in return rather than punishment. This is the mercy at the center of the devotion. The Sacred Heart is patient with sinners and generous toward all who turn back to Him.
Bring Him your sins today, without hiding and without despair. He already knows them, and He calls sinners precisely because they are the ones who need a physician. The shame that keeps a man away from God is itself a thing the Heart of Jesus wants to heal.
Heart of Jesus, patient and full of mercy, I bring You my sins, the ones I can name and the ones I am afraid to name. I am sorry for them, and I trust Your mercy more than I fear my own weakness.
Do not let shame drive me from You. Draw me back, heal what is broken, and make me whole. Heart of Jesus, patient and rich in mercy, have mercy on me.
Today's IntentionToday I bring my sins to the Sacred Heart and trust His mercy more than I fear my weakness.
Pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. Repeat three times: "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You." Then close with the Final Prayer below.
The Fourth Day
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
Among the promises the Lord made through St. Margaret Mary was this, that those who place their trust in His Heart will not be lost. The devotion lives or dies on confidence. The Sacred Heart asks to be trusted, especially by the man who feels he has run out of strength.
Whatever you are carrying as you pray these days, the work, the family, the fear you mention to no one, you do not have to carry it alone or solve it first by yourself. Hand it over. The Heart that opened on the Cross is wide enough to hold all of it.
Heart of Jesus, hope of all who turn to You, I have leaned on my own strength for too long and found it wearing thin. Today I bring You everything that weighs on me, and I lay it down before You.
Teach me to trust You as a child trusts his father, in the things I can see and the things I cannot. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.
Today's IntentionToday I hand the Sacred Heart everything I have been carrying alone, and I trust Him with it.
Pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. Repeat three times: "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You." Then close with the Final Prayer below.
The Fifth Day
"One of the soldiers pierced his side, and at once there came out blood and water." (John 19:34)
When the soldier opened the side of Christ, blood and water flowed from His Heart, and the Fathers of the Church saw in that stream the sacraments by which the Church is born and fed. The Heart of Jesus is a fountain, and it was opened so that we could drink.
This is why the devotion has always led men back to confession and to the Eucharist. Grace is not an idea to admire from a distance. It is poured out, and there is a fountain you can actually go to. Let this novena draw you toward the sacraments, where the Heart of Jesus gives Himself.
Heart of Jesus, opened on the Cross, from You flow the living waters that wash and feed Your Church. Draw me to the fountain. Make me hungry for the Eucharist and unafraid of confession, where You wait to give and to forgive.
Let me live close to the sacraments, and through them let Your life take root in me. Heart of Jesus, fountain of life and holiness, fill me with Your grace.
Today's IntentionToday I ask the Sacred Heart to draw me to the sacraments, where He pours out His life.
Pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. Repeat three times: "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You." Then close with the Final Prayer below.
The Sixth Day
"They shall look on him whom they have pierced." (John 19:37)
The Sacred Heart is shown wounded, crowned with thorns, and opened by a lance, because love that goes all the way costs something. He was pierced for our offenses, and He asks, gently, that we look on what our sins have done and answer it with love rather than turning away.
This is what the tradition calls reparation. It is the love of a friend who, seeing the one he loves wounded, draws closer instead of fleeing. Offer the Lord today some small act of love to console His Heart, a sacrifice, a prayer, or a kindness given for His sake.
Heart of Jesus, wounded for my sake, I look on what my sins have cost, and I do not want to add my indifference to Your pain. Receive whatever love I can offer in return.
Let me make some small reparation today, gladly and quietly, for love of You. Heart of Jesus, pierced for our offenses, draw me close to Your wound.
Today's IntentionToday I offer the Sacred Heart a small act of love in reparation, and I refuse to look away.
Pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. Repeat three times: "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You." Then close with the Final Prayer below.
The Seventh Day
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you." (John 14:27)
Among the promises of the Sacred Heart is one dear to every father and head of a household: I will give peace in their families, and I will bless every home where the image of My Heart is honored. The Lord wants to reign not only in our souls but at our tables and in our marriages.
Bring your home to Him today. Name the tensions, the strained relationships, and the worries you carry for the people under your roof. Ask the Heart of Jesus to be the peace of your household, and consider giving Him His rightful place there by honoring His Heart in your home.
Heart of Jesus, our peace, I bring You my home and everyone in it. Where there is tension, bring patience. Where there is distance, bring reconciliation. Where there is fear for the ones I love, bring Your calm.
Reign over my household as its true Lord, and make my home a place where Your peace is at home. Heart of Jesus, our peace and reconciliation, reign in my family.
Today's IntentionToday I bring my home to the Sacred Heart and ask Him to reign there as its peace.
Pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. Repeat three times: "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You." Then close with the Final Prayer below.
The Eighth Day
"Do not be anxious about anything, and the peace of God will guard your hearts." (Philippians 4:6-7)
The Lord promised to console those who come to His Heart in their troubles and to bless them in their undertakings. The devotion has never been a flight from real life. It is a way of bringing the whole of life, the burdens and the hopes and the daily work, under the goodness of a Heart that wills our good.
Lay before Him today the things you are anxious about and the things you are working toward. Ask His blessing on your efforts and His comfort in your trials, and then let His peace, which is stronger than your worry, stand guard over your heart.
Heart of Jesus, full of goodness, You have promised to comfort the troubled and to bless what is offered to You. I place my anxieties and my hopes in Your hands, and I ask Your blessing on the work and the people You have given me.
Let Your peace stand guard over my heart when worry returns. Heart of Jesus, full of goodness and love, I trust You with all that troubles me.
Today's IntentionToday I place my anxieties and my hopes in the Sacred Heart and ask His blessing on them.
Pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. Repeat three times: "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You." Then close with the Final Prayer below.
The Ninth Day
"Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace." (Hebrews 4:16)
The novena ends where the devotion has always pointed, in consecration. Having adored His love, asked His mercy, and brought Him our trust, our homes, and our needs, we give Him the one thing He has always wanted, which is the heart itself. He asks to be more than a guest in a corner of your life. He asks to be its King and center.
Give Him everything you have prayed for these nine days, and give Him yourself with it. A heart consecrated to the Sacred Heart loses nothing. It finally finds the One it was made for.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I consecrate to You my life, my home, and all I have asked these nine days. Take what I have placed before You and do with it what is best, for You love me better than I love myself.
Reign in me as King, and make my heart a dwelling place worthy of Yours. I give You my whole heart. Heart of Jesus, King and center of all hearts, I consecrate myself to You.
Today's IntentionToday I consecrate myself and all I have prayed for to the Sacred Heart, and I give Him my whole heart.
Pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. Repeat three times: "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You." Then close with the Final Prayer below.
The Final Prayer · Recited Each Day
O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore Thee, I love Thee, and with lively sorrow for my sins I offer Thee this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, and pure, and wholly obedient to Thy will.
Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in Thee and for Thee. Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions; give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, Thy blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Amen.
